Ephemeral Empire

This painting gradually developed into a vignette of the rise and fall of great empires of the past.  Allusions to spires, temples, fire, and water evoke the dissipating beauty and grandeur of long lost civilizations, many that stood for millennia but inevitably fell to time, war, tyranny, greed, and progress.

I used paint scrappers to apply compounding layers of paint.  Textures and patterns are muted or intensified with light and dark glazes.
