Hide-N-Seek

This fourth painting in my dog series is new ground for me because it involves balancing daylight, color, and color saturation, for objects you can see outside and inside a space.  Light is such an elusive friend.  Maybe even finicky.  You have direct and indirect light effects, reflected light effects, ambient light effects, multiple light source effects.  The list goes on.

When you aren't using a still life setting or a photograph to go by, daylighting can make you and your painting either look brilliant or dim in a hurry.  You have to show daylighting respect and learn her ways or she will embarrass you and make your paintings look marginal and cheap.

So, I'm consciously learning her ways.  "Hide-N-Seek" is my recent attempt to craft a scene that combines objects that are directly and indirectly daylit both inside and outside a residential foyer.  The scene portrays a simple game of hide-n-seek between a pup named Cali and a cat named Artemis.  Cali is outside looking in while Artemis goes stealth behind sheer curtains partially veiling his presence.
