I have always admired painters who work fast and loose and still somehow manage to create compelling visual images that look painterly and alive. Being an architect, however, I have spent much of my life drawing very straight, precise lines using mechanical tools and computers to ensure rigid conformity to absolute orthogonalness (yes, I made up that word for dramatic effect).
With this latest painting, I put down my orthogonal crutches and let the painting be imperfect on purpose. I worked fast (for me) and edited on the fly without resorting to tightening things up or overcorrecting.
What I got in return is a surprisingly imperfect but pleasing image of three windmills silently marking the wide, flat plain of La Mancha, Spain.
I chose this setting after spending no small amount of time studying and enjoying Miguel de Cervantes's classic novel, Don Quixote. The painting's solitude suggest the titular character in the novel no longer has need or desire to attack these gentle giants.
And, yes, I know he dies in the end, but his spirit carries on.
