This is the first of three paintings I'm creating for a new series entitled "Architecture".
It is my first attempt at using the drawings and images from a few of my favorite architectural icons to inspire original compositions and paintings. I selected Steven Holl's design for the Contemporary Museum of Art Kiasma in Helsinki, Finland to be my first inspiration.
This painting utilizes a floor plan, a building section, and a single image of the museum's most dramatic facade to create overlapping shapes as positive-negative fields and patterns that play off each other, creating new shapes and patterns in the process to play with.
This painting presented many challenges to me in terms of technique, composition, and focus. The first version had no focus, no center. So I made significant revisions to it and finally landed on this latest version.
I will confess, I think this new version is better than the first one, if for no other reason than I gave the composition more structure, which in turn gives the painting more focus and visual identity. Kind of like when you take a photograph from your vacation to Spain from a dramatic bullfight and place it in a frame. Something about framing the image focuses your attention on the core of the moment. The center holds, the edges become commentary.
