This is another study using randomly textured plaster and pareidolia to discover one of the truly great hunting dogs emerging from a thicket along the water's edge.  I've never owned a Redbone Coonhound before; in fact, I'm not sure I've even seen  one in person before.  But that didn't stop my subconscious mind and subjective impressions from seeing this beloved hound in the earliest states of the painting.

When I first started teaching myself how to paint, I assumed the best way to learn was to follow the example of great master painters like Edward Hopper, an artist known for his careful and meticulous studies and annotated sketches.  Hopper would outline minute details and directions for each of his paintings long before paint ever touched canvas.

I never dreamed I would deviate from that approach for one founded on subjective identification of patterns in random stimuli, without any preconceived ideas regarding subject matter or composition.

But that is precisely what I'm doing. I discovered this Redbone Coonhound by chance. Random chance.  Once found, I gave him a an equally random context, but still one befitting a coonhound, and crafted a simple story not unlike a Hopper painting, only without all the preparation beforehand.

The result is a surprisingly vibrant and energetic abstraction of a redbone hound, nose in air, ready to find what he may.
