Overlapping layers of ambiguity give this painting a unique visual quality where the sum is much greater than its parts.  The main figure, her garment, and the surrounding landscape are intentionally ambiguous, almost like symbols longing for further definition.  

Thick organic layers of paint from a previous painting add tension and grain to the composition.  Heavy black lines at times follow these original outlines or defy them altogether.  New and old paintings play off each other in ways that draw views deeper into the final image.
